Have you considered creating your own darkroom for B&W? Your biggest investment would be an enlarger. I found an old Beseler for $200. I've never found a photo lab that did NOT screw up my photographs. A darkroom allows you complete control over the end result. Sometimes you can make a darkroom out of a bathroom.

I need to someday take the time to learn how to develop film myself before I can do that. I will eventually do so, although I don't want to give up color film yet, and I understand that developing that is very expensive.
